NFC technology, terminology and security aspects - "NFC Basics" soon on offer

A new training course “NFC Basics” will soon be available on our offer. It is expected in Q1 2014 but pre-orders are already available. The current version of training description is available here.

From the dawn of history man has aimed to make his live more comfortable. In spite of the large number of goods man is surrounded with today, the amount of his commitments and obligations are extensive. ID card, driving license, bus tickets, credit cards, loyalty cards – have become obligatory items that fill up the pocket. Most of these documents can be read by applying the wireless, non-contact technique using the electromagnetic field, known as Radio Frequency Identification (RFID). Although the method is standardized, it is not possible to use single unified device representing identification cards, credit cards etc. Having these documents as separate cards seems to be archaic in the age of quad-core processor devices. Therefore, integrating them became an issue of concern.

Since the smartphone penetration on the market is rapidly growing, and the cell phone is often within arm’s reach, the new set of standards adopted contactless radio communication for mobile devices. This solution is called Near Field Communication (NFC). It allows the NFC device (usually a smartphone) to be used as an entrance ID, e-ticket, for contactless payment; similar to the system applied in the credit card, etc. In other words, all of these could be integrated into a single mobile phone.

The most promising application is mobile payment, already implemented by many banks. In this solution the mobile terminal plays a role similar to a PayPass card. The NFC-enabled cell phone is brought into close proximity to the electronic payment terminal (equipped with the NFC feature) and the transaction takes place.

Furthermore, the NFC brings with it an easy-to-use two-way communication between the endpoints. An extremely fast connection setup is performed automatically after two NFC devices are brought close to each other (within a distance of a few centimetres). After that the smartphones are prepared to exchange data (vcards, pictures, video files).

The biggest banks and corporations are offering products assisted by the NFC solution. Concurrently, leading mobile equipment vendors are launching smartphones equipped with the NFC feature. As a consequence, one can expect this system to become an integral part of day-to-day life. Therefore, the fundamental knowledge about the NFC technology, terminology and security aspects may be of interest to all using this system. To meet these expectations, Leliwa offers “NFC Basics” training course, which is expected in Q1 2014. Details will be published soon.
